TASMANIAN YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT – Aidan Johnstone has asked: I’m here from Hobart tonight. I have friends who have got apprenticeships but found when they have finished that there is no job as the work has dried up. In Tasmania, treasury estimates there are roughly 19 100 job seekers and there are only about 500 jobs in total advertised each week across the newspapers and on the internet. So I would like to know what evidence there is that cutting off the safety net in high unemployment areas will lead to a significant decrease in unemployment and not lead to an increase in crime, homelessness, suicide and poverty amongst young Australians?
