TEEN LIFE IS A BALANCING ACT (2): RIGHT VS WRONG How often do you use your conscience to make decisions in your daily routine and serious encounters? Each time I address this question to teens, they look at me perplex as if telling me: what kind of question is that. But it is a question worth asking. It is a reminder that more than often, we find ourselves compelled to make a decision to cross or not the moral and ethical lines in our life. Simply put, it means: dont just ACT. Ask your conscience to validate the moral rectitude of your behavior/choices because, Conscience asks the question: is it right? (Martin Luther King Jr). Before you ACT, ASK if it is right or wrong. Use moral and ethical principles as mirror to groom your lifestyle. It is called, being PRINCIPLED. A life without principles is a life without foundation and direction. Missing on one is already an handicap. Missing on both is short of a tragedy. And it pops up through calamitous consequences such as unplanned pregnancy, an inability to make the right choice when it matters. What are the key principles that define who you are, how you live, your attitude and behavior? Those principles form the core of your conscience. They direct your life. To make the right choices, one has to use his/her Conscience. Let me now ask you this question as a reminder: HOW OFTEN DO YOU USE YOUR CONSCIENCE? Our next Balancing Act will explore the difficult choice between immediate gratification and long term goals.
