TEN SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BISHOP ZUZA AND BINGU WA MUTHARIKA (ANTHUWA ANALI AMODZI) 1. Both died a sudden death. Zuza died after a tragic accident and Bingu suddenly died of Cardiac arrest. 2. Both died on the day, THURSDAY. Zuza died on 15th January 2015 and Bingu died on 5th April 2012. 3. Unlike other notable persons who die in foreign hospitals, both were nursed at our local hospitals. Zuza was rushed to Saint Johns Hospital while Bingu was tried to be resuscitated at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi. 4. Both were devout Catholics. 5. Both died while in office. Suza died while he was a Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese while Bingu died while he was the president of the Republic of Malawi. 6. Both were courageous and fearless. In front of Bingu during the event of national day of prayers on 16th October 2011, Zuza said, “the person who thinks and believes that he or she is perfect is actually the most stupid and foolish person. In Chichewa and Tumbuka we call such people as “chitsiru chamunthu,” or “chindere chakufikapo. ”. Bingu retaliated that he could not be called a fool later at a National Agricultural fair. Just for being called a dictator, Bingu chased British High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane-Dyet away despite impeding bad consequences of his action. Bingu used to say “ndikunyenyaninyenyani”, “Pitani ku msewoko tikakumana komko”, “ine ndine nyalubwe”, “Mwapanga demonstration yanu mukuti mafuta kulibe, pakali pano mukungoona mitsinje ya mafuta?”, “ Mukuti mafuta sakupezeka, kagone pa mseu ngati galimoto sikakugunda, magalimoto onsewa akuyendera madzi?”. 7. Bishop Zuza was the FIRST Malawian to be the Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese. Bingu was the first Malawian to be the Secretary General of Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), covering 22 Member States. Mutharika was Malawis first head of state to assume the position of chairperson of the African Union in 2010. 8. Both were Chancellors at the time of their death. Zuza was the Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi while Bingu was the Chancellor of both University of Malawi and Mzuzu University. 9. Both obtained their primary and secondary education in Malawi. Zuza was educated at Rumphi Minor Seminary before advancing himself at Kachebere Major Seminary. Bingu got his primary school education at Ulongwe Mission and Chingoli in Mulanje and also at , Ntambanyama and Malamulo, in Thyolo and then secondary school at Henry Henderson Institute (HHI)in Blantyre, 10. Both were indigenous Malawians. They were locally born in Malawi. Zuza was born at Malembo in Mzimba in the northern Malawi in 1955. Bingu was born at Chisoka school in Kamoto village in Thyolo district in 1934.
