TESTOSTERONE! The hormone travels through the plasma membrane - TopicsExpress

TESTOSTERONE! The hormone travels through the plasma membrane (cell boundary) and the nuclear envelope (DNA boundary). The activator (androgen) is already bound to the DNA at the Hormone Response Element sequence, but it cannot do its job, because it is bound by a corepressor. When the hormone binds to the activator, it causes a shape (conformational) change. This releases the corepressor and recruits the coactivator. RNA polymerase II joins the party, and transcription can begin. Transcription is the creation of mRNA from the blueprint of DNA. The mRNA codes for the creation of specific proteins. In this case, the proteins induce an increase in muscle mass. -KH
