He eats a sandwich and then sleeps from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. When he wakes up, he takes a shower and sometimes visits his friends. 7 ANO Emily Carr, British Columbias most famous artist, was born in 1871. Her parents died when she was still a teenager. She studies art in San Francisco and Paris, but when she came back to Victoria, she kept a house called The House of All Sorts, where she was the landlady. Many years later, she began painting again. To find subjects for her paintings, she took trips into the forests of British Columbia, and she often met with the First Nations people and painted them too. Emily Carr also wrote several books, and she won the Governor Generals Award for one of them. 8 ANO Saga of a champion Imagine yourself waking up the morning and finding an empty space where once there used to be a leg. Well, that’s exactly what happened to Lars Grael after a tragic accident in Vitória, ES, in 1999. He was sailing his small sailboard when a motorboat piloted by a drunken man collided with him. The accident took his right leg forever. But that was not enough to stop the life of a champion. He did not give himself a break. His participation in your Olympic Games, the bronze medals in Seoul (1988), in Atlanta (1996), and many other victories were essential to his recovered. Soon he was back on the sea again. Soon after the accident, Lars and his brother, Torben, implemented a social project that gives young people the opportunity to learn how to sail. Nowadays the Grael Project is present in Niteroi, Maricá and Vitória and has assistend over four thousand young people. In 2002, Lars wrote the book Saga de um Campeão in which he tells how the accident changed his life. And in 2004, he won the South American Championship in the Star class and the Brazilian Ocean Class Championship. When asked how he is able to do all this, Lars says, “I lost a leg, but I didn’t lose my life”. 9 ANO A JUDGMENT Antonio was a good young merchant of Venice. He was very kind and rich. Shylock, the Jew, was a sting man who lent money to Christian merchants at great interest. They hated each other, but one day Antonio was forced by circumstances to ask Shylock to lend him three thousand ducats to help his friend Bassanio, who was going to get married. Shylock, pretending kindness, said he would lend the money, and take no interest. on one condition Antonio should go with him to a lawyer, and there sign in merry sport a bond, on which was written that if he did not repay the money by a certain day, he would lose a pound of flesh, to be cut off from any part of his body that Shylock pleased. Antonio agreed because in few days his ships would come back with many the value of the money. So Bassanio could marry Portia, the woman he loved. Unfortunately, due to a violent storm, all Antonios ships were lost and he wasnt able to have the money to pay Shylock at the appropriate date. When Bassanio told Portia the whole story about how he had got the money for his marriage, a secret that he had kept so far, she made a plan to save Antonio. Dressed as a lawyer, she went to the court as Antonios defender. Nobody was able to realize that the unknown attorney was a woman, so disguised she was. When the trial started, she addressed herself to Shylock saying that by the Venetian law he had the right to have what was promised in the bond. Then she tried to convince him that he could be merciful and forget the terms of the bond. Nervously, Shylock said, By my soul, I swear, there is no power in the tongue of man to change me. I have a bond an I´ll do everything according to this bond. He wanted to cut off the pound of flesh near Antonios heart and was sharpening a long knife with great eagerness. A pound of Antonios flesh is yours. The law allows it, and the court gives it. According to the terms of the bond you may cut this flesh from off Antonios breast, said Portia. Then sharpened his long knife again, and looking eagerly to Antonio, he said. Come, prepare, but Portia interrupted him by saying, Wait a little, Jew. There is something else; this bond here gives you no drop of blood. The words are; a pound of flesh! If you shed one drop of Christian blood, your land and goods will be by law confiscated and given to the state of Venice. Portia argument saved Antonios life. And all the audience admired the wonderful wisdom of the young lawyer.
