THAKUR SITARAMDAS OMKARNATH has written~ Of all the Vrats which are dear to Sri Hari, there is none comparable to Ekadashi. Ekadashi is MahaVrat... This Vrat is recommended for devotees of Pancha Devtas. ...................................... Thakur had narrated an incident of Rukmangad Raja, a king who owned a wonderful garden. But in the morning, he used to find that the flowers had been stolen, but the thieves couldnt be identified. A wise old Brahmin suggested that Nirmalya [flowers after being offered to Deity] should be scattered in the garden, because the theft seems to be the work of divine bodies. Nirmaya was scattered as per Brahmins suggestion. And it was found that the heavenly Apsaras [angels] had lost the power of rising because of stamping on the Nirmalya. The king was pleased to see find the Apsaras in his garden. The Apsaras said that they have lost the power of flight, and it can be regained only if someone offers the holy virtue of Ekadasi Vrat. The king ordered that anyone who has fasted and remained awake lat ekadasi night should be brought. No one was found, except a sinful maidservant who had been reprimanded by her master, and had fasted and remained awake without any knowledge of Ekadasi Vrat. The maid willingly offered her virtue to the Apsaras, and the Apsaras regained the power of flight. The king was very impressed, and started following the vow of Ekadasi in his kingdom.
