THANKSGIVING PONDER...... Today was a great day! We had fun romping with our grandchildren and sitting outside by the fire pit. Dinner was exceptionally grand beside the fact that the day started with chaos. Because Ellen ñ I are so busy with the wedding/brides maids luncheon, as well as family matters, we decided to order dinner. I called several places and the most appealing was Winn Dixie. We only have one left, so be certain to pick it up before 9am....I did and discovered that the turkey was FROZEN! What idiot thought that ANYONE would even want a frozen turkey on Thanksgiving Day? Well, Boenings came to the rescue. I cooked the 11 pound bird and it turned out perfect. I had already prepared oyster dressing, sweet potato soufflé, macaroni ñ cheese (especially for Bennett), avocado ñ tomato salad, croissants, whipped butter, aioli (for Ellen), broccoli ñ rice (Erins best), company corn (Erins beat), cranberry compote and, of course Mimosas for sweet Briege. Sitting with the young married couple by the fire I could not help thinking what I did in Vietnam in 1969 on Thanksgiving Day. Im still not quite certain why this came into my weary head. The troops in the mess haul tried their best to make it a good day. Despite the press formed turkey, (they said it was turkey, but we all thought it was chicken), the heat and the war itself, we did celebrate the day. My CO found me somewhere, I dont quote remember where I was, and said that I had a very important package from home! On the package it read, EXPEDITE DELIVERY .....a somewhat small package that immediately caught my attention. I opened it up and inside was a tape. Some of you have no idea what that is because those tapes are now a moot subject. This cassette simply said on the label, in bold letters, HOUSE NOISES? When I took the cassette out, a small note inside read, Happy Thanksgiving! I put the cassette into my cassette player and heard: The screen door on the side of the house, Missy, my dog, barking, the chimes from the side door, the chimes from the front door, the cuckoo clock cuckooing, the noisy air conditioner on the side porch, walking over the heating grate by the kitchen, the squeaky swinging kitchen door and finally, my mothers cancer ridden raspy voice saying, God speed my brave son...I love and miss you! What a gift! It truly is the small things in life that sustains you! Happy Holidays to all your way!
