THE AWAKENING IS REAL Yes, we knew that the awakening was happening across the country; door to door, stall to stall, settlement to settlement, village to village, but in some ways it was tentative. That has now changed with the march through Lautoka on Saturday. The awakening is now for real and felt nationally. While a couple of hundred of us marched, it was the multitudes on the sidewalk that were most interesting. They smiled; they cheered; their body language saying it all that they were proud of SODELPA, that it was time the silence of 8 years ended. For us in the march those were watershed moments, and the moments were priceless. The week was also a week of discovery. At the Sigatoka village meeting where PM Laisenia Qarase spoke, the questions from the villagers were illuminating it is permissible to see: -Is it right that Bainimarama and his team continue to run Government, and campaign? -Rabuka had his coup and then his Constitution, but he kept institutions such as GCC intact in his Constitution-now Bainimarama has his coup and draws up his Constitution which does not have the GCC, why? -Will Bainimarama’s Constitution be ratified by Parliament? And in an area where a road was recently done over, the villagers asked, ‘what is more important, roads or what we iTaukei treasure as a people?’. We discovered from these questions that Bainimarama has failed to make his case to the grass root. He’s been at it for 8 years; there’s only a few weeks left, he’s panicking, stridently branding everything as ‘Lies, lies, lies’.
