THE BENCH I can see him. I see him running with his tongue hanging out. His ears flopping around. He is not winded or tired he feels like he could run forever. He is running through the tall grass because he likes to hear it and he likes to feel it on his face. He takes a minute to wade in the water. Only up to his chest because it is too cold on his belly. As he walks he laps the water up. It tastes cool and refreshing. He begins to run again and then stops. Looking at something in the distance. His tail will wag two maybe three times. Then he realizes that he sees someone he knows. He begins to run. He runs so hard and so fast that his feet hardly touch the earth. The excitement in him builds because he knows who this is. He sees Dad. His grandpa. Dad pets him all over. It has been so long. Rocko leans against his legs so hard it almost knocks him over. Dad asks him how we are all doing. Rocko will listen so intently that Dad knows he understands. If he could he would let Dad know that we all love him and miss him terribly. Dad will ask him why he left. Rocko will say with his big beautiful eyes. That it was so hard to leave everyone but it was just his time. Dad will understand because that is why he left too. They will agree to sit on a bench together and wait for us. The everlasting sun on their faces and cool breeze in their hair. I can see them on a bench in heaven...
