THE BEST IN THE WORLD: TESIO AND NEARCO So many people have read Breeders We Like: Federico Tesio (posted below) and gained so much insight into his brilliant breeding methods they have asked to see more photographs of the legendary Italian breeder Federico Tesio and his masterpiece, the stallion Nearco. The fact is that nobody in thoroughbred breeding bred so many champion horses or so many breed shaping sire lines right across the world as Tesio. He created thoroughbred bloodlines that not only influenced the racetrack and the thoroughbred breeding industry right across the world but also the camp draft, cow horse, cutting, show jumping, three day eventing, dressage, polo, polocrosse industries. If you carefully research performance pedigrees right around the world you will find the hand of Tesio in so many great horses - no matter what the sport - and no matter what the breed. So many breeders and competitors who are nervous of using thoroughbred outcross blood are genuinely surprised to learn of the thoroughbred influences that exist in so many champion horses. The great Hazelwood Conman, for instance, carries thoroughbred blood through both his sire Comet (by Elliots Creek Cadet by Commandant TB) and again through his dam Hazelwood Romance (by Romeo from Cardonis Breeze by Just Fred by Young Valais TB) Doc Bar - the horse that changed the face of cutting history - is a grandson of the thoroughbred Three Bars, while the legendary cow horse Reminic carries the thoroughbred Bend Or several times in his own pedigree. Acres Destiny - another outstanding sire in Australia - also carries three crosses of theThoroughbred Doc Bar. There are numerous other champion horses that have pedigrees heavily interlaced with thoroughbred blood which we will examine in a further article. Nearcos legacy comes from three of his sons: Nasrullah, Nearctic and Royal Charger. Nearco retired undefeated after 14 races. With the political turmoil and the possibility of war caused by Benito Mussolini aligning Italy with Germany, Federico Tesio sold Nearco in 1938 to Martin H. Benson of Beech House Stud in Newmarket, England, for £60,000 (a world record for a sire in those days; equal to about £3.3 million today). The potential importance of Nearcos progency was forecast in the provision of a bomb shelter to ensure his survival should London be subject to an air raid. Nearcos legacy primarily comes from three of his sons: Nasrullah, Nearctic, and Royal Charger. His other sons included Dante, winner of the 1945 Epsom Derby; Sayajirao, winner of the 1947 St. Leger Stakes; and Nimbus, that won the Epsom Derby and 2,000 Guineas in 1949. In all, more than 100 of Nearcos sons have stood at stud around the world, which is a world record, apart from St Simon. Nearco was also the damsire of the French multiple Group One winner Charlottesville, and damsire of the Epsom Derby winners Arctic Prince (1948) and Tulyar (1952). He was an outstandingly prepotent sire, eclipsed only by his grandson Northern Dancer. In England, Nearco sired the winners of 657½ races worth £501,665.[verification needed] He was first on the Sires List three times, second once, third twice, fourth four times and fifth once. Some of Nearcos descendants were ranked among the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century by The Blood-Horse: #2 Secretariat, #9 Seattle Slew, #19 Bold Ruler, #24 Nashua, #35 Ruffian, #43 Northern Dancer, #57 Riva Ridge, and #86 Fort Marcy. Other notable descendants were Ballymoss, Shergar, Arkle, Never Say Die, Mr. Prospector, Nasrullah, Nijinsky II (winner of the UK Triple Crown), Royal Palace, Better Loosen Up, Sir Ivor, and Invasor. Sireline descendants of Nearco include eight of the 9 horses to earn over $10,000,000 in stakes wins. These horses are Deep Impact, Makybe Diva, Narita Brian, Sunline, Symboli Kris S, T M Opera O, Viva Pataca, and Vodka. Nearco died from cancer on 27 June 1957, and was buried at Beech House Stud. According to France Galop, from 1985 through to 2010, every Prix de lArc de Triomphe winner can trace a bloodline back to Nearco, his son Nasrullah, and his grandson Northern Dancer.
