THE CREATURE CHRONICLES Bedeviled By The Devil Monkey The Appalachian Mountains are a mountain range that extends 1,500 miles from Newfoundland to central Alabama. Within this mountain range sightings of a rare and unusual creature have occasionally been reported. The creature dubbed “the Devil Monkey” by eyewitnesses have made an everlasting impression by those unlucky enough to have come into contact with the el usive beast. The Devil Monkey has been described as a large baboon-like creature about 3-4 feet tall. The hair color has been described as light brown to black, with a blaze of white fur from its neck to its belly. The creature has short forelegs with claws and muscular hind legs. The creature has been said to have three rounded toes with tracks measuring 12-15 inches. A long tail is sometimes reported as being bushy or occasionally hairless. The face is described as baboon-like or dog-like with a muzzle. The distinguishing characteristic of the Devil Monkey is its aggressive nature. The creature has been reported to attack humans, dogs and to have killed livestock and small game. Although there have been few reported sightings of the beast they have been quite memorable. The most famous Devil Monkey sighting came in 1959 in Saltville. A couple by the last name Boyd were driving home early one morning when a monkey-like creature rushed at the car and chased it for a short while while grabbing at it with its front paws. Later when the couple got home they found three long deep scratches in the front door. Several days later a couple of nurses were driving home from the Saltville area and the creature attacked their car and ripped the top off their convertible. The year 1973 brought our next encounter with the Devil Monkey in Albany, Kentucky where three black bushy tailed giant monkeys were said to have slaughtered livestock in the town. Georgia was the next hotspot in 1979 when locals saw a monkey-like critter with a bushy tail and a face like a dog. In 1996 Barbara Mullins was driving down highway 12 in Louisiana when she noticed an odd carcass on the side of the road. Mullins snapped several pictures of the carcass. The creature looked to be about the size of a Saint Bernard and covered with thick coat of dark wooly hair. The last “reported” sightings of the Devil Monkey seemed to have occurred in 2001 in rural Danville New Hampshire nine times within two weeks. What exactly then is the Devil Monkey? Several explanations have been brought forth. 1. The most plausible explanation is that the creature could be a feral pet monkey that had escaped captivity from its owner. Feral pet monkeys have formed breeding colonies, especially in Florida. 2. The next explanation is that the Devil Monkey could be some sort of genetic mutant that has escaped captivity from a secret government laboratory. Given its baboon-like and possible canid face perhaps its a hybrid animal. 3. The Devil Monkey could be a surviving Protopithecus brasiliensis which is an extinct fruit-eating spider monkey from the Late Pleistocene Era. 4. Lastly, the Devil Monkey could be a surviving Theropithecus oswaldi, which was a large baboon that lived 650,000 years ago and is the ancestor of the modern Gelada baboon. Whatever the Devil Monkey is are one thing for certain, if you see this creature there can be no monkeying around, jump in your car and leave as soon as possible, preferably not in a convertible.
