THE DEAF MAN KNOWS… I was invited to a church many years ago. The church had an interpretive ministry for the Deaf years earlier, but it had closed when the leader left. The service I went to was a revival service, and they were unable to provide an interpreter. I spent the entire service trying to read lips. There was “special music” before the sermon, and if you are Baptist, you know that’s not a congregational song, but either a solo, or a group singing. I sat on the front row and the lady who sang was standing right in front of me. After the service, the head deacon was told to take me out to eat with the evangelist and his family, plus some of the other church members. We had almost a dozen there, if I remember right. We arrived at the restaurant, were seated, and they waitress took our order for drinks. One of the men there broke silence with his opinion. “That had to be the WORST special music I have ever heard at a revival service.” Some nodded in agreement and a few others made some comments. I was lost, and just wanted to make sure I caught what the man had said. The man repeated himself, that he thought that solo that the woman performed was the worst he had ever heard at a revival service. “I disagree,” I said. The man looked at the others and said, “The Deaf man disagrees.” I bet you the Lord was with me on that. I know what I SAW. I sat and watched the woman sing, and before I had the benefit of this man’s opinion., all I could see was adoration, and someone singing from her heart. No, I didn’t hear the music or the voice, but I know what I SAW. Only an hour or two ago, I attended my friend’s memorial service. He passed away August 9th, and the memorial was today. His oldest son decided he was going to sing “There Goes My Hero”. I have no clue what that song sounds like, the music, or the son’s voice, either, but I don’t think it really matters. A Deaf person has the unique ability to absorb a song without hearing singer’s voice, but watch his every move, facial expression, every sparkle in his eyes, the adoration, the baring of his soul. His voice, I couldn’t offer an opinion on that, but I can tell you it don’t matter. God is not interested in the quality of the voice but the force behind it. Take it from the Deaf man, sing from your heart, bare your soul, turn yourself inside out and don’t worry about how good your voice is, because if your motive is pure, IT’S ALL GOOD.
