THE GREAT INDIAN POVERTY DEBATE My research based article on the ‘The great India Poverty Debate `` may be published in Dharitri (subject to editorial constraint) ( dharitri , page-6) tomorrow (Sunday). Please read how we are hoodwinked by great economists and columnists. The article will deal very important issues relating to poverty line. There has been pungent criticism on planning commission for declaring a poverty line based on very low amount on which a dog cannot live. But surprisingly, many Economist and Columnist such as Swaminathan Ayar ( Times Of India,July28) ,T N Ninan ( Business Standard, July 19) , Naresh Chandra Saxena ( Busines Standard ,July 25, 2013) Mihir Saha, Planning Commission Member ( The Hindu Aug 5,2013) are coming forward to defend new poverty line on the plea that recent poverty line is based on Tendulkar Methodology which is similar to official poverty line of World bank based on $1.25 purchasing Power Parity (ppp). First poverty line adopted by Tendulkar is below than world bank`s this extreme Poverty Line. Surprisingly, they don’t tell that the world bank`s poverty line of$ 1.25ppp is average poverty line of 15 poorest countries of the world. While India is calming to be 4th largest economy of the world in term of purchasing Power Parity, is it not shame to follow the less than poverty line of 15 poorest countries of the world? While China has Updated Poverty line to$ 1.83 PPP in 2011, India is with less than $1.17PPP, much below that world bank`s extreme poverty line. Even poverty line of many developing countries is much higher than us. What to speak of advanced countries. We are hoodwinked by such great economist and columnist.
