THE GREATEST RELIC OF THE TRUE CROSS The greatest Relic of the True Cross outside of Rome is preserved in the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana, Cantabria, Spain . According to Father Sandoval, chronicler of the Benedictine order, this relic corresponds to the left arm of Holy Cross, St. Helena (mother of Emperor Constantine in the fourth century) left Jerusalem when he discovered the cross of Christ and the thieves . The wood is within a cross-shaped reliquary of gilded silver, with flordelisados ply, designed in Gothic tradition, on a 1679 workshop in Valladolid. Measurements are sacred wood of 635 mm. the vertical post and 393 mm. the bar, with a thickness of 40 mm., making it the largest preserved relic of the cross of Christ, outside of St. Peters Basilica in Vatican City which houses the very largest. A scientific analysis of the wood of this piece found that botanical species of wood is Sempervivens Cupressus L., being an extremely old wood and that nothing precludes the intended age range.
