THE HOLLOW OAK TREE of RHANDIR-MWYN This Magnificent 600 – 700 - TopicsExpress

THE HOLLOW OAK TREE of RHANDIR-MWYN This Magnificent 600 – 700 year old tree has been nominated into the “Welsh Tree of the Year” competition. The Woodland Trust is running the competition to promote ancient trees of Wales. The competition has about five other entries – some even older, but the vote is not based on age, it’s based on our own memories and local history of such trees, the fond place they hold in our hearts, be it where we used to play as kids, hide and then surprise our friends, recollections of it as a pigsty (! )- to ducks hatching their ducklings within it, or the impromptu concerts held inside it! This tree may be on the deeds of our property, but despite its aging process (which becomes more and more apparent each year) we are merely guardians; this majestic treewill probably outlive both of us! Then another lucky family will become its new guardians. To VOTE please go to woodlandtrust.org.uk/welshtree Vote for The Rhandirmwyn OakWouldn’t it be fantastic if this lone hedgerow tree, that has presided over the village of Rhandir-mwynfor over 600 years…wins!!! Some of the folklore and history surrounding the tree are as follows…but we’re sure you all have your own personal stories and memories as well. • It is said the tree was planted to commemorate The Battle of Bosworth in 1485 • Tree enthusiasts have confirmed it to be well over 600 years old • Local Historians believe that Pwllpriddog used to be known as Pwllpraddog (Pwllperyddog, meaning ‘king’s pool’). Perydd is an old word for ‘king or lord’; which could represent over 500 years of oral tradition that Pwllpriddog was once the home of princes • The village pub - The Royal Oak was named such, because the king/prince of its era had to hide from his pursuers in this tree! • The children of Pwllpriddog Farm played in the hollow, some 60 years ago! • Tywi Bowen of Pwllpriddog (early 1900’s 2001 – buried at Seion Chapel)) kept a pig in the tree! • More recently ducks have hatched ducklings inside the tree, and some roost on the branches • Welsh Due Band –‘ Brigin’ launched their second CD and played a short concert for the audience outside from within the tree. (Check out the recording…it is sort of black and white – so quite haunting). The song title means “everything in its place” brigyn/english/video-popethyneile.htmlPan lansiwydein hail CD - Brigyn2, roeddemynawyddusigyfunoperfformiadbywgydachanumewnlleoliadgwirioneddolystyrlon.
