THE MAN CHEKWAS OKORIE!!! Chief (Dr.) Chekwas Okorie, a Prince of Alayi, was born 61 years ago, precisely on the 19th of March, 1953, at Amaeke Alayi in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. He did his Primary School Education between 1960 and 1966 at St. Michaels Primary School, Umuahia, his secondary School in Annunciation Secondary School Isuikwuato in 1967 and passed out in 1973 due to the three-year disruption of School Time-table in the former Eastern Region as a result of the Nigerian Civil War. In 1974, he proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus where he studied Management and graduated in 1978, with Honours in Management, having bagged a Bachelor of Science Degree. Chekwas had an early exposure to Igbo Rights Crusade when he became a member of the Igbo Forum in 1976, which three years later metamorphosed into what is now known as Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Chekwas had brief teaching experience as a Lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State in the course of his National Youth Service. He also had a stint as an Assistant Manager with the Nigerian Reinsurance Corporation in 1979 and worked for about four years with the West African Water Drilling and Allied Co. Ltd., where he rose from Commercial Manager to General Manager in 1982. In 1982, Chekwas floated Chel Water Nigeria Ltd. which has given birth to other subsidiary companies. As an employer of labour, running his own companies, Chief Chekwas Okorie now had the latitude to launch back into his natural calling of promoting Human Rights. He did this through the many organizations which. he either founded and or occupied leading positions, namely: Nzuko Abia na Imo, President General, Igboezue Cultural Association - Founder and National Leader, Member of the Elders Council and Ime Obi of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Member, Governing Council of Abia State University 1992 - 1996, Member, Board of Trustees Centre for Igbo Studies, Abia State University 1997 - 2000. He holds doctorate degree (Honoris Causa) from University of America, Murrieta, California, U.S.A. Despite being awarded several titles in honour of hysteria sterile attributes, he cherishes his title of Oje-Ozi Ndigbo (Messenger of Igbo People) because he considers the title to be a sufficiently humble title and a true reflection of his natural calling to stand out for the marginalized Igbo people and other similar disadvantaged Nigerians. In Politics, Oje-Ozi Ndigbo, has been a prominent and vocal member of all the Political Parties and Associations he belonged to, viz.: Secretary, National Finance Committee, United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), Chief Returning Officer, First ever National Convention of the UNCP, Founder and Secretary General, Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC) 1996 and 1998, Member, National Caucus of All Peoples Party (APP) now ANPP, Member, Peoples Democratic Party National Initiative, Candidate for the Office of National Secretary PDP - November 1999 National convention. Having not succeeded in the registration of a National Political Party based on Igbo initiative in 1996 and 1998 due to a number of factors which have now become history, Chief Chekwas Okorie deployed the benefit of hindsight and experience to float the All Progressives Grand Alliance - APGA in June 2002. This singular achievement placed the Oje-Ozi Ndigbo as the first Igbo man to become the Founder and National Chairman of a registered National Political Party in Nigeria. Chief Chekwas Okorie led APGA to a phenomenal feat in the much manipulated 2003 general election. APGA became one of the three biggest parties in Nigeria out of 30 existing Parties then. APGA under the leadership of Chief Chekwas Okorie, was widely reckoned as the foremost Opposition Party in Nigeria. Such was the Oje-Ozis vibrant, robust and prompt interventions in the polity that the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Abuja Chapter conferred on him on 7th May 2004, the award of CREDIBLE LEADER OF OPPOSITION in an impressive ceremony at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja. On the 12th of July, 2007, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in a historic ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos enrolled Chief Chekwas Okorie in Nigerias Democracy Hall of Fame. He is presently the founder and National Chairman of United Progressive Party (UPP). This is the man to vote for come February 14... Vote CHEKWAS OKORIE FOR PRESIDENT!!
