THE MOST AMAZING WEEKEND! This was a wonderful weekend. On Saturday we celebrated Eid al-Adha with my parents. This celebration has many important values for people around the world. For myself, I have always been humbled by the amazing sight of millions of diverse people with a common sense of humility. The participants of Hajj come from all parts of the world representing many ethnicities, cultures and experiences. It is a where diversity and community share the same space. After the Eid celebration I went to another place where many people also share a sense of community. Eid was the same weekend of our provincial championship. Clubs from across Ontario came together to share their passion for sport. I have always enjoyed these events. Watching young athletes begin their journey into in competition is wonderful to watch. This years provincials touched me personally because my youngest daughter made her competition debut. She has been pestering me to compete – most likely because she looks up to her brother – although she may never admit that! ☺ Motivated by her ‘fan club’ she enjoyed her first competition. But the most exciting part of the experience was becoming friends with her opponent. Soon after the bout, Ruqaya and Victoria were seen playing together in the warm up area! Doing cartwheels, playing tag, giving each other piggyback rides, cheering on all the bouts involving young women, and even raiding the snack table – they had become best friends! This is the essence of true sport – competitors becoming comrades. It was one of the best Eid gifts I could have given my daughter! One gift I received on Eid was experiencing my amazing team of officials, medical and volunteer staff flawlessly run another major championship! I missed the beginning of the event due to Eid prayers. But I arrived to see a smooth running event. I am so grateful to be surrounded by such kind and generous people. I am in debt to you all.
