THE NETHERLANDS TO ENGAGE IN SRI LANKAN DAIRY SECTOR To follow up on the Tailor Made Training organized in the Netherlands for key members of the NLDB (The National Livestock Development Board), a team of researchers from the Wageningen University and Research Centre came to Sri Lanka to carry out an assessment to evaluate the emerging opportunities in the dairy sector in Sri Lanka. They had meetings with key government and private sector stakeholders including the Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development. The assessment team visited several dairy farms and processing facilities in Sri Lanka while conducting interviews with key persons across the dairy supply chain. The results will actively be shared with the members of both the local and Dutch dairy sector and will be used for the formulation of strategies on the best ways to establish commercial linkages between the two countries. The rapidly expanding dairy sector in Sri Lanka offers tremendous opportunities for international business and investments. Local dairy industry supplies only around 40% of domestic requirement and the balance is imported spending a colossal sum of Rs.30 billion annually. The Government of Sri Lanka changed its policy in 2012 and greater emphasis was put on raising self-sufficiency in dairy production.
