THE ONLY THING Maitreyi, a female Vedic Philosopher in conversation with her husband ..Just like everybody else Maitreyi was afraid. But she kept on talking to her husband and said: ‘here is exactly where you have thrown a delusion over me. You have frightened me by saying there will be no more gods; all individuality will be lost. There will be no one to recognize, no one to love, no one to hate. What will become of us?’ Yājñavalkya clarifies: ‘Maitreyi, I do not mean to puzzle you. When there is duality, then one smells something, one sees something, one hears something, one speaks something, one thinks something, and one knows something. But when to a knower of the Self everything becomes the Self, then through what—and what object—does one smell or see or hear or speak or think or know?
