THE POPULACE ILLITERACY ON LEADERSHIP In highlighting the deficiency of governance, most people desire criticizing government so much that they forget to add any idea or contribution to how governance can improve. The concept of being a critic due to our dislike of certain political groups or individuals blind us that we can’t see anything good in the system even when we are contributing nothing to that system. We are clueless on the way forward but we take delight in insulting and assaulting our leaders verbally without any sense of a true direction. We do not realize that as a people, we are the government. Most critics haven’t done any great thing within their immediate environment; and these fellows are the ones talking the most. They are only good at pointing accusing fingers while others are busy affecting their immediate environment. A cliché’ goes, ‘don’t ask for what your country will do for you, but rather ask what you can do for your country.’ If you haven’t done anything yet for your country then you are like those you accuse. If given a leadership position, you’ll mess things up just as they did. You aren’t better off. Leadership must be experienced within your immediate area of influence. True Leadership is from the bottom-up and not from top-down as we see in positional leadership. In history, all the great leaders (Mandela, Mother Theresa, and Mohandas Ghandi) influenced the society from bottom-up. They influenced the society from the lowest position such that the highest positions could not ignore their influence. Real leaders do not wait to acquire leadership position, they lead all the way. The life of a leader is an embodiment of leadership and the leader influences the immediate environment positively. In a leader is a visionary and true leadership is as good as a clear vision. True leadership is not about position. You do not need a position to lead. You need a clear vision (the peoples’ vision) to lead them. The vision is the dream mapped out or designed to meet the need of the society and to make life better. Any version lacking the basic nature of the above definition is not the vision. In leadership, there is nothing like ‘a vision’ but rather ‘the vision.’ The vision is always out there sourced from societal needs available. In fact, you don’t create the vision; you identify it from the societal need. The reason we keep talking about a vision is because we are thinking about ourselves. We say I am a leader instead of ‘the leader.’ Don’t be a leader, be the leader. ‘A leader’ can be someone who wants to lead but ‘the leader’ is already in leadership leading. A leader can be a positional leader but he is not leading in the true sense, but the leader may not acquire the leadership position, yet he is the one leading the people. Therefore leadership is by the vision. If you do not have a common vision, you are not ready for leadership in this age and you are not one of the leaders needed in this generation. This is why most politicians failed in leadership; they lacked the vision (a common vision). In this pressing age, Leadership requires the ability to eliminate the desire for self gain and to carry the burden of others by serving your generation and the generation unborn with your gifts, vision, dreams and ideas. Everyone needs your gift, everyone needs your efforts and we all need your dreams, but most importantly we need the fulfilment of our vision. Every change in a society is primarily the product of a common vision at work. When the blind leads the blind, who will save the nations? A visionary is the eyes that can see a better future for the society and work towards it. It is not enough to have the vision; you have to put the vision to work. A dormant vision is like a blind vision, a product of a clouded version of the vision (an unclear vision). When the vision is clear, the working of the vision commences. Note, leadership is not about you but it’s about others. The true leaders live for others and not for themselves.
