THE RUNT OF THE LITTER As mentioned in my first - TopicsExpress

THE RUNT OF THE LITTER As mentioned in my first book, Ill Try to Be Short..., I was born in downtown Chiefland, Florida but city hall was only two blocks from my hog pen. My rural background allowed me to be acquainted with multiple births of pigs, kittens and puppies. The very smallest animal of the litter is referred to as the runt. During my Vanderbilt law school days part of the curriculum involved the students being in a court of appeals referred to as the moot court program. Mike and A. W. represented the Defendant while Bill and I served as counsel for the Plaintiff. Two second year students, Howard and Fred, served as supervisors of the four first year students. The research, brief writing and oral arguments covered a period of several weeks and the six of us became well acquainted during that time. Thirty years later I reviewed the careers of the six of us. A. W. Bolt was a senior partner of a successful law firm in Anniston, Alabama and had seriously considered a campaign for Governor. Mike Ahlen became a law professor at the University of North Dakota. Bill Lebo had recently retired as general counsel and executive Vice President of the Hilton Hotel Corporation in Beverly Hills, California. Howard Leibengood had served as Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate and later a Washington lobbyist. Fred starred in several Hollywood movies and is better known today as former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN.) who was playing a prominent role in the leadership of the United States Senate. Howard had recently joined his staff. Based upon that review, I concluded that I am not only physically but also professionally the runt of the litter.
