THE SABBATH DAY CONFUSION!!!! For centuries, the Sabbath or Religious Day of Rest has been in controversy among many Christians in the Christiandom; some say Sunday; others, Saturday… Some say that the Scripture has been twisted to turn the Original Sabbath day (Seventh Day aka Saturday), to Sunday…. Critiques also say that Sunday is a Day of the Worship of the Sun God etc etc…. But whatever the controversy may be, it all trickles down to three basic qns ; SUNDAY WORSHIP, IS FOR GOD OR FOR Gods?? IS IT FROM GOD OR FROM MAN? Lastly, IS IT GOOD OR BAD? So the question now is WHEN IS THE SABBATH DAY??.... Please follow me through the following analyses… First and foremost (as I usually do before writing any controversial stuff) I must mention that I am not trying to prove myself astute or knowledgeable (just digging for the truth)… I am just trying to use the scriptures (which we all believe in) as the basis to try to unravel some of the controversies surrounding this controversial topic, and then ask questions… Please take note, Im not speaking for any Religious Sect…. I STAND TO BE DISPUTED OR CORRECTED ANYWAY. Now let’s roll on…. We must first understand that before the Days of the week were named to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… to Saturday Day, they were known or named by the Hebrews as FIRST DAY, SECOND DAY, THIRD DAY in that order (as written in da sciptures)… We must also understand that according to the Hebrews’ order of days, Sunday is the First day of the Week and not Monday. Therefore, Saturday becomes the Seventh day of the Week. It is for this reason that Some Christian denominations hold Saturday as the Sabbath Day and not Sunday. WHAT THEN IS THE SABBATH DAY AND ITS SIGNIGICANCE….??? The Bible tells us that God created everything in six days, and rested on the Seventh day. He therefore decreed in Exodus 20: 8 that we rested or observed the Sabbath (Seventh Day) with holiness… From a nap short it is without doubt that Christians are to hold Saturday as the ORIGINAL SABBATH DAY, using the Hebrew calender…. SO ONE MAY ASK, WHY SUNDAY (FIRST DAY WORSHIP)??? The New Testament epistles contain several teachings that affirm SABBATH DAY REST but FIRST DAY WORSHIP (now called SUNDAY)… This distinction must be well noted… The bible makes us understand that Jesus was raised from the dead on the First day of the week. Mark 16: 9 ‘’ Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.’’ He also Appeared to one Cleopas and another on their way to Emmaus, in the evening of the First Day of the week which he resurrected, and shared bread and wine with them. He appeared to them again the following week (on the first day) as stated in John 20:19 ‘’ Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.’’ (the absence of Thomas) Joh:20:26: ‘’And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. This day was also the First Day of the week. On the day of Pentecost (the 50th day from firstfruits and thus usually calculated as the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK), the Spirit of God was given to the disciples and they baptized 3,000 people into the apostolic fellowship. Brethren, what is the significance of this First Day Mystery to the Early Christians… Culd it have been just a coincidence ??? They actually called the Resurrection day of Christ as the Lord’s Day. It was on the First Day of the week…. Lets even assume that this first day stuffs do not make any meaning, or warrant any form of worship on that day, but it is a fact that the Apostles met sometime/most times on the First Day of the Week to worship, teach or pray because of the significance of the day to them. Act 20: 7 ‘’ And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.’’ And in 1 corinthians 16: 2 Paul spoke about collections or contributions: ‘’ Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. ‘’ From the foregoing analyses one could see that original idea of the Early Christians was to disassociate the Sabbath Day (Day of Rest aka Saturday), from the Lord’s Day (Day of Worship)… To them, the Worship Day was meant to come Immediately after the Sabbath Day. Thus, you rest on the Sabbath Day from all work, and Worship the Lord on the First Day of the Week… This among other things, was considered as Blasphemy among the Jews (Non believers) HOW SUNDAY WORSHIP CAME TO STAY???? Like I stated earlier, the Sunday worship (Lords Day) was practiced alongside observing of the Sabbath-day rest, and was a widespread Christian tradition by the 2nd Century. To such worshippers the first Day (Sunday) was the Lord’s Day as he rose from the dead on the first day; and Sabbath Day was the usual Day of rest Decreed by God. Without doubt the early Christians also observed the Sabbath; Ac:13:42: And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath Ac:17:2: And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures…. (among several texts in the scriptures) As time passed, in the 4th century onwards, Sunday Worship took on the observance of Sunday rest in some Traditions. Sunday or First Day Worship thus became synonymous with First-day Sabbath, contrary to Seventh-Day Sabbath. On March 7, 321, the Roman Emperor Constantine (the same Man who allowed Christianity in Rome) issued a decree making Sunday a day of Rest from labor. Subsequently, some Church Authorities, opposed widespread Seventh-Day Sabbath Observance as Judaizing tendency (Jewish Tradition). For example The council of Laodicea (canon 29) required Christians to separate or stay away from Jewish traditions and laws, stating that Christians must not Judaize by resting on the Sabbath Day, but must work on that day, and then if possible, rest on the Lord’s Day, and that any found to be Judaizers was considered anathema (banished) from Christ. *** The beginning of infiltration of original Christian teaching*** Hmmm…. What the ‘Church’ has done to Man Kind… It becomes evidently evident that the changing of the Sabbath Day (Rest Day) to Sunday (Lord’s Day) is the handy work of Men who claim to hold position of God on earth, but overstep HIS commandment with their traditions…. Gradually, what seemed to be the day of remembrance of the Lord has been taken as the Sabbath Day Decreed by God… The Catholic Church wants to take credit for changing the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday… Protestant churches cannot claim innocence of this plot because they also observe Sunday as the Sabbath Day. Sunday, in its modern form, is not a day of worship of any gods (Sun god or whateva) as claimed by others (for Christians have God in mind as they worship); It was, and still is, a calculated plot to bring about a new concept or belief other than the one handed to the Israelites by God. Consequently, the Jews have lost that right of the Sabbath… For me, the Day of Worship actually does not matter (you can worship God on any day including Sundays)… But if it comes to the Sabbath, I would go with what the Bible says. I am not a Seventh-Day Adventist… I just seek to follow the commandment of God. IS SUNDAY WORSHIPING A SIN??? I can’t speak for you dear brother or Sister… Decide and Decipher for yourself… If you Believe that Sunday is the Lords day to Praise him, But Saturday is Sabbath-Day decreed by God to rest of all activities, then you are reasoning with me, like the early Christians… But if you Believe that the Lord’s Day is the same as the Sabbath Day as Decree by Men then so be it… It all borders on faith But of course, God commanded us to observe the Sabbath, but he did not restrain us from worshipping him on any other day. What is your faith??? May the Lord help us know the Truth…. Amen!!!
