THE SPEECH I DELIVERED ON THURSDAY 6:30 pm IN THE STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY AUDITORIUM. I’ m Mandela C. Sangura, a 3rd year B-com student. I know many of you know me, maybe we have met within the corridors of Strathmore university, shared a joke or met at the field. But today as we convene here, I want to give you an insight into the other side of me, a side full of passion to serve others, a side that believes that me and you, as stratizens we can reach greater heights with our little combined efforts. First and foremost, allow me to pass my sincere gratitude to you all, those who gave a chance to serve you as your sports representative for the year 2013, those who stood shoulder to shoulder with me through the challenges I faced as under the docket, those with whom we celebrated and shared the success we achieved together, coming up with the ever best sports day in Strathmore history and to you my critiques, a big thank you for I realized that without you, without your criticisms, I won’t have achieved all I did, I won’t be the same man standing before you. Indeed, it is true that before gold can glitter, it has to go through fire! Me being here today, sharing this moment with you, seeking the top seat in the student council. This decision I made driven by my passion and desire to serve my fellow students and soar the Strathmore fraternity to greater heights, not just as a school but as a community of students. All my three years of academic life here in Strathmore, all have been made possible because of a scholarship: someone sacrificing his extra- coin, someone may be giving up a chance to buy a new shirt, go on vocation, all because he/she believes that everyone deserves a chance in life, an opportunity to achieve our goals and dreams through dreams. I believe this is the same notion, the same belief that me and you uphold- a chance for every and single stratizens to smile. They say that the shoe wearer knows where it pinches most, the pain of enduring shattered dreams, worries of unpaid school fees and the pain of missing classes, all I have endured, all I have worn and I know where they pinch most and that’s why today, I seek your helping hand in ensuring that no one, no Stratizen deserves to go through the same, wear the shoes that I wore, suffer the pain of this blister. I back-roll to you a better Elimisha Stratizen: An Elimisha Stratizen that is inclusive of all, that doesnt stop knocking at office doors to ensure that dreams are realized, that’s full of strategies for the future sustainability, an Elimisha Stratizen with credible leaders, leaders with open mind and a heart for serving, going out of their way just to make the most worthy investment; helping a needy brother! The current state of Elimisha is not promising. The question remains, what of that student who was looking up to it? How many students have missed their exams because they cannot clear their balance? Together with the council we shall come up with a strong committee made of students who are willing and able to serve. We shall have Dr. Jim Mcfie as our committee adviser keeping in mind that he has many links to the external world. We shall also strengthen our marketing Strategies, coming up with proposals, knocking office to office, including the staff and together we shall raise funds to support our fellow students!!!1 Best ranking institutions in the world are not only known for producing academic giants but also social geniuses. Strathmore is striving to map its name on this list and I believe we can’t achieve this without incorporating the students, their welfare, and the mentoring department making it a problem solving unit rather than listeners. We all woke up to the saddening news of a student who had committed suicide, a situation maybe that could have been avoided maybe with just a simple smile, little care or compassion or a listening ear. We are a family, Strathmore is a community and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that each family member, each single community member affords a smile, at least a bright day! Maybe time has passed by, generations have changed and eras too; from the so called analogue to digital but one thing has kept on, from the old golden days of Mandela of South Africa to the bright days of Mandela of Strathmore: the power of sports uniting souls. And if Mandela used sports to unite the council, all the faculties. Each member has to play his/her own role because we have objectives to fulfill. Strathmore University is a vibrant family that adore and cherishes sports and was evident during the last sports day the annual tournament. We all became one; we all united to cheer our brothers and sisters and held hands to celebrate our victories. I myself being a footballer, a sportsman seeking your vote, I count myself as the best candidate, the glue to stick stratizens together, work as a family and advocate for a healthy and fit society through advocating of the student’s gym. The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team We shall continue to push for improvement our sports facilities because as university we have the best sports facilities. The Strathmore hockey team (Scorpions) got the Silver in the Africa Club Championship. Yvonne a 1st year BIF student was the top scorer. We have the best we need the best! The student council works hand in hand with the committees in different departments. We shall market these committees and take the most committed students to be members. By doing this we shall be devolving power to students. The students shall play a major role in policy formulation in the university! A new committee called the student affairs committee shall be formed to act on urgent matters affecting students. For instance escalation of fees, push for creation of more labs, introduction of Wi-Fi in the school buses, YouTube and opt net the price of food in the cafeteria, transport problem etc. The committee shall also organize a team building for all 1st years and any other interested class to avoid this issue of loneliness in Strathmore University. It shall also organize frequent meetings between the mentoring department and the class reps; the fashion cops and the class reps, the student baraza’s and inter-faculty tournaments. This is the time and I need you students to choose the best among us. I am easily approachable and a good listener and realistic. You have been seeing around classes because I am an everyday person working for everyday students. This is not time to endorse each other; this is the time for students to endorse their own choice. We are all rational thinkers and we have to make the right choice. We have to light tomorrow with today. Before I can acknowledge you for giving me your time, a listening and attentive ear, I just want to remind you that although I haven’t promised heaven in Strathmore, it doesnt mean that you and me, through our little efforts can’t create a little comfort-zone in Strathmore for us and our brothers and sisters, where everyone can be happy, happy in achieving their dreams, becoming the best they were engineered to be! This is not the time to build our university Strathmore for the future; this is the time to build the future for Strathmore. Unless you believe in alliances, propaganda and unrealistic dreams, vote elsewhere. But if you do believe in realistic agendas and a man of the people, I Mandela is the man! We are the best we have to vote for the best. We can only do this by putting me to test! They say Mandela died I say Mandela’s legacy is still alive. Go an extra mile and vote for Mandela! TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. KEEP WALKING,KEEP TALKING THE TALK!
