THE SUB-TROPICS HAVE A BEAST FOR US!! I described this system to Russell yesterday as the “King Kong of the tropics” and that is starting to ring true! As I write this, it is deepening fast and the first signs of this low are starting show on the radar up north! A little earlier than expected, but still set to deliver tomorrow and Wednesday for the North Island! For us, we expect a few SW showers this evening, won’t be much, but don’t be surprised if you hear patter on the roof later on! Tomorrow is looking pretty miserable to be honest, it starts off okay, but low cloud and drizzle for most of the afternoon, coupled with fresh easterlies which will keep the temperature down, expect a high of 11deg! Wednesday is looking gnarly with heavy rain at times and gusty south easterly winds! The east coast from Christchurch northwards is set to bear the brunt of this, but the further north you go, the worse it will get! Kaikoura looks set to get nailed with, with heavy rain from Tuesday night through until Wednesday night when 100mm could fall! Christchurch itself will see persistent rain which will be heavy and squally at times. We could get 60mm of rain! South of the city in places like Timaru will see light rain or drizzle during this period! Thursday sees drizzle or light rain clearing to showers during the day! We warn that this system will cause surface flooding in places and we recommend you take necessary precautions! It is also likely that river levels will be running high, so watch out for that! Russell will be back in the morning with more details and an outlook on tomorrow! On a side note, we are going to have to delay the next competition until this system has passed, just so we aren’t rushed off our feet! But do make sure you send in any photos you get of the rain, surface flooding, or anything extreme!
