THE SUMMER OF 1858... marked a new era in the delivery of mail and stagecoach operations here in Placerville. The first Overland mail stage, bringing letters and passengers from the East, arrived in town (156 years ago) on Monday, July 19th of that year, at ten oclock in the evening. The event caused universal rejoicing and was celebrated with bonfires, speeches, and other demonstrations of gladness. As reported, Mr. W.M Cary illuminated his magnificent Hotel, and the whole edifice from base to summit, was literally a blaze.
