THE TRIED AND TRUE ROAD Gods Message yet again: “Go stand at the crossroads and look around. Ask for directions to the old road, the tried and true road. Then take it. Discover the right route for your souls. But they said, ‘Nothing doing. We arent going that way.’” ~ Jeremiah 6:16, The Message ** Proclaiming whether the husband/father or wife/mother is more important in a family is similar to what C. S. Lewis said regarding his era’s debate on whether faith in Christ or good works is more important in a family: it is like proclaiming which blade is more important in a pair of scissors. Both are important, though each has particular roles, roles which are explained in Scripture. God invented families, so He should know how they work best. The whole of the Bible reveals both good and bad examples of family leadership. From Genesis to Revelation, we see references to father, mother, husband, and wife. Regardless of a secular culture’s undue experimentation in redefining the roles of husband/father and wife/mother—and whether both are even necessary—God’s way is still best. As a matter of fact, those who have “tweaked” God’s plan will be held accountable on that Day, since “tweaking” God’s plan has a name: sin. The family is the foundation of a community and nation. If we wonder why our culture is askew and broken, we must look at the philosophies that have been transplanted in the past century. I wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper decades ago. In it, I proposed a hiker walking toward a destination. Soon, the landscape changed to a threatening setting, thus giving clear evidence that the hiker had taken a wrong turn. The decision is this: Will he backtrack and find the correct path? Will he continue on the wrong path because he will not admit that he made a mistake or he does not want to go to the trouble to research the right path? In America, the landscape is becoming increasingly hostile. As our text says: “Gods Message YET AGAIN: ‘Go stand at the crossroads and look around. Ask for directions to the old road, the tried and true road. Then take it. Discover the right route for your souls.’”
