THE VALUE OF PRAYER “Do all this in prayer, asking for God’s help”. Eph 6:18 GNB For the Christian disciple there has to be a balance between doing the things God commands on the one hand, and prayer on the other. With the wide range of activities that God requires his servants to pursue, sometimes prayer gets crowded out . The six pieces of the Christian’s armour are all to be worn. It is not a case of choosing one or two and ignoring the rest. All are equally necessary if the disciple is to engage effectively with the “evil tricks” of the Devil. The important thing to remember, also, is that they are God’s armour. They are gifts with which the Lord himself enables you to do battle. But it is your responsibility to take it up, to put it on and to use it confidently against the powers of evil. You will only do this if you engage in prayer. Prayer keeps you focused on God, not on the evil you are facing, nor on your own hopelessly insufficient spiritual power. Prayer is not another spiritual weapon. It is the indispensable activity which needs to pervade everything you do. You do not equip yourself with God’s armour in any mechanical way. By praying you express your complete dependence on God and God alone. If you fail to pray all the activity in which you engage will be hollow and shallow. In the end you will probably stop and ask yourself what you are achieving in all this fevered activity. But if you pray so long and never get on to engaging with the spiritual work to which Christ directs you, you will become equally ineffective. It must be prayer and work. PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, help me to keep the balance between work and prayer.
