THE VILLIAN OF 2014 AWARD GOES TO MANOHAR PARRIKAR By Aires Rodrigues As the year comes to a close it is time to select the Villain of the year. For the 2014 award for being the Master in Manipulation and U turns let us unanimously bestow it on none other than Manohar Parrikar, the Defence Minister of India who is currently also the week-end Chief Minister of Goa. He has no competitor as over the last 53 years of Goa’s so called liberation we have not seen a politician so dubious and deceptive. Manohar Parrikar needs to publicly explain what he has achieved for Panaji while being the MLA for the last twenty long years. He was also the Chief Minister of Goa from 24th October 2000 to 2nd February 2005 and once again from 9th March 2012 to 8th November this year. By all his empty talk he has taken the people of Goa and Panaji in particular for a ride. As Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar had protested on almost any and every issue. He was part of various public protests and even forcibly blocked major roads and even the Highways. He used the activists and NGOs to rake up all sorts of issues against the then government but turned his back on them all. After becoming Chief Minister he displayed zero tolerance to any sort of protest or agitation while wanting everyone to be at their best behavior and remain silent spectatators as victims of injustice. Manohar Parrikar had vigorously used the Right to Information Act to unearth the misdeeds of the earlier regime but once he came to power its implementation he stifled and strangulated. Most of the press today is managed and manipulated by the government. Even the Judiciary has not been spared with judges intimidated and coerced to toe the government line or face the brunt. With his very chequered trail of corruption and nepotism, Manohar Parrikar who has always been dictatorial and ever so vindictive has left behind Goa in a utter mess while saffronising the entire administration and conveniently slipping off to Delhi sensing that things were getting out of hand. He made endless U turns on being miserably unable to fulfill the mountain of promises made. His height of dishonesty can be measured from his getting enrolled as a voter of Panaji on a fake address at a shanty opp Pharmacy College in Panaji where he never ever resided. On August 7th 2008 Manohar Parrikar while in the Opposition had publicly stated that it would be worthwhile to shift the Navy out from Dabolim and again on 30th May 2013 he reiterated that the Navy could be shifted to allow Dabolim be a fully fledged civilian Airport, but now on becoming the Defence Minister he has dubbed the demand to move the Navy out of Dabolim as Anti-national. Manohar Parrikar was already the Defence Minister when the Narendra Modi government decided to observe 25th December as Good Governance day. Why did he not object to such a controversial and divisive move? With his deep roots in the RSS, there is no denying that Manohar Parrikar has always been extremely communal and casteist which he has in vain subtly tried to camouflage. Over the years Manohar Parrikar has mastered the art of discreet wheeling and dealing. After all that hands-on experience in Goa, no wonder in less than a month at Delhi he was able as Defence Minister to clear arm deals to the tune of a whopping 4444 crores. On the quantum of kickbacks pocketed less said the better. Jai ho.
