THIS DATE IN COMETS HISTORY AUGUST 13 1959--Zoran Savic was born in Gornji Milanovac in what was then-Yugoslavia. The Z-Man joined the Comets during the ill-fated 1981-82 season and became one of the teams leading scorers through 1984 before moving on to the LA Lazers. Savic later played in the AISA/NPSL and returned to KC in 1991-92 with the newly-transplanted Attack. He was having one of his finest days ever, scoring four goals on January 20, 1992 vs. the Dayton Dynamo at Municipal Auditorium, but it turned out to be his last game as a player when he broke a foot and was lost for the season. With Keith Tozers departure to the Milwaukee Wave following the season, Zoran became the Attacks head coach and proceeded to lead them to the 1993 NPSL Championship. Zoran currently is an assistant coach with defending MLS champions Sporting Kansas City, and those of you who havent seen the Z-Man since the 80s/90s might be in for a little surprise... 1981--The Comets 1981-82 schedule was released with all home games starting at 7:35. More than 1,300 season tickets had already been sold, according to Tim Leiweke. 1991--The Dallas Sidekicks, and, by extension, the Major (Indoor) Soccer League, were given a stay of execution when Dallas Mavericks owner Donald Carter purchased the soccer club and spared the league from almost certain extinction. Carter lost $4 million when he owned the Sidekicks the first time around as an expansion club in 1984. Dallas, ironically, was the MISLs final expansion franchise placed in a NEW market--all the subsequent others, New York (twice), Cleveland and St. Louis, were replacements for defunct franchises. Pittsburgh wouldve been another one of those, but their ownership group decided to save their money and backed out for 91-92, so the league would continue on for its final season with the seven remaining franchises. Commissioner Earl Foreman said he wanted Kansas City back in the league for 1992-93, but cautioned, If somebody else comes in there [i.e., the Attack], I hope they dont muck up the market. Pretty silly coming from the commissioner of an already majorly mucked-up league...
