THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 29th December 1815 (by Amma Fosuah Poku) Sarah Saartjie Baartman, died in Paris, France, isolated and lonely after being taken from her several years previously from her native South Africa. Sarah was just 20 years old when she was transported to Europe and exhibited in a freak show around Britain under the name Hottentot Venus. Made to wear a skin tight body stocking to emphasis her natural African body shape, she was seen as a curiosity by many Europeans. Her exhibition however met with some protests and a group of abolitionists in the African Association made an attempt through the British courts to give her liberty to say whether she was exhibited by her own consent. However, when called to the witness stand Sarah denied that she was being coerced to exhibit her body against her will. Sometime after the court case Sarah was sold and taken to France where she was made to perform titillating acts under even more degrading conditions. Whilst in France she also came to the attention of scientists who examined her in the name of science. Over time Sarahs novelty waned and she entered prostitution as a means of supporting herself. Until 1974, only 40 years ago, Sarahs skeleton, preserved genitals and brain were displayed in the Muesée de lHomme in Paris. After the African National Congress came to power in South African in 1994, President Nelson Mandela formally requested the return of Sarahs remains. France finally conceded and returned the remains of Sarah to her homeland on 6th May 2002. She was eventually laid to rest in her homeland on 9th August 2002.
