THIS INSURGENCY...MANY THINGS I DONT UNDERSTAND. My interpretation of this govts policy towards this insurgency has been constant: the C-in-C has been suspiciously nonchalant about the whole mess. At a point last year, many (including APC) believed his nonchalance was a deliberate ploy to make a strong case at the polls by initially handling the insurgents with kid gloves and then moving in to finish them off so close to the elections that hell carry the shine of victor and deliverer into the polls and win. In my cynical manner when it comes to politicians, I decided to see if Jonathan will actually crush the insurgency around December or so but alas, this is mid-January, elections are barely 5wks away and the insurgency is still raging wild. So there goes that conspiracy theory... Like all Nigerians Ive followed news of this insurgency from when they were bombing only churches and drinking joints; Ive watched several stages of the terrorism unfold; Ive listened to countless security analyses by experts and also followed the govts responses...and to say the truth, Ive often felt...in all these, do we really have a C-in-C here or what? Even the military strategy of merely being in defensive positions is very baffling. I confess I dont have any knowlege of military things but commonsense tells you that you cannot just sit and wait to be attacked but to go search and destroy enemy locations, disrupt their supply lines, discover their recruitment bases and destroy them, bomb their camps and bivouacs to oblivion and generally dont give them breathing space to constitute the deadly nuisance they are. But what do we have? Sit and wait for them to attack, then proclaim victory after repelling an attack. Honestly sirs, I dont get it! On the issue of armaments, Ive asked this question a billion times, with the battery of info at his disposal, shouldnt GEJ have discovered USA was blocking Nigerias arms purchases much earlier? And when he discovered that, why didnt he make a very quick and far-reaching foreign policy decision to drastically scale down relations with the USA especially seeing that they arent even our largest trading partner anymore? Why didnt the President consider a policy shift to seek new friends who can sell us the hardware to crush the insurgency IN ALL URGENCY? Im convinced that if he paid well publicized, well arranged state visits to China, Russia and India with major policy pronouncements that Nigeria was seeking new friends and allies, our military would have received the necessary firepower to keep these death-bearers called Boko Haram off our shores long ago. But then, what do I know sef? Im neither a security analyst nor am i a foreign affairs expert. Im just on Facebook expressing the frustration of fellow citizens at what seems a glaring leadership deficiency which is costing lives almost on a daily basis.
