THe greek God Priapus, permanent erection(priapism), sickle cell disease and cure via cyanate: In Greek mythology, Priapus or Priapos (Ancient Greek: Πρίαπος), was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. Priapus is marked by his absurdly oversized, permanent erection, which gave rise to the medical term priapism. Priapism is a condition of prolonged erection of the penis. Sickle cell anemia is the most common cause of priapism in boys. Up to 35% of men with sickle cell disease are affected by painful, prolonged erections termed ischemic priapism. Cyanate containing foods are consumed as a normal part of the diet, such as Jamaica, and these are places where a sickle cell sufferer can live a normal life. Cyanate, which among other effects (21) has been shown to specifically inhibit carbamoyl phosphate synthase and, thus, L-arginine biosynthesis . Therefore cyanate specifically inhibits L-arginine biosynthesis. Cyanate is the oxidized non-toxic form of the toxic chemical cyanide. L-arginine is a vasodilator that is converted into nitric oxide by nitric oxide synthase. Like L-arginine, nitric oxide is also a potent vasodilator that dilates the blood vessels to the penis resulting in penile tumescence(penile erection). By blocking the action of the vasodilators like L-arginine or nitric oxide with cyanate that would result in vasoconstriction(narrowing of the blood vessels) and this would result in detumescence of the penis. Priapism is serious because prolonged erection can damage the penis. The foods that contain cyanate are yam, cassava, sorghum, and millet.
