TILLANDSIA, AKA; AIR PLANT Tillandsias are a great, easy care plant. Unique in style and with a wide range of ways to display they make a wonderful houseplant. You can hang them from a piece of fishing line, mount on a piece of wood, add them to a floral arrangement, include one or more in a holiday wreath, add to a terrarium, place a few with other plants, use one of the specially made Tillandsia hangers, the list goes on . We have even seen them added to wedding bouquets. Remember though, Tillandsias are not potted in soil, they are epiphytes, which means they grow on other plants or things, their roots are for the sole purpose of attaching to these items. Tillandsias are also referred to as AIR PLANTS. Does this mean the plant lives only on Air? In a way, yes. Considering that air has moisture and dust particles the Air Plant absorbs this moisture to stay hydrated and takes in small dust particles for nutrients. An Air plant’s natural environment is higher in humidity than our homes. In order to have a healthy, long-lived Air Plant, we need to duplicate that plants natural environment. With an Air Plant this is a combination of watering techniques. 1) MIST your air plant every day. 2) SUBMERSE your air plant at least once a week. 3) At least once a month SOAK your Air Plant for 1-2 hours. Longer if your plant has gone extremely dry. Never allow your air plant to sit in water, this can be deadly. Place in a bright location, but not in strong direct light. When you first purchase an Air Plant, soak it for 1-2 hours so you can see what it looks like fully hydrated. This will be your point of reference in case your Air Plant ever gets to the point of going too dry. Remember, MIST, SUBMERSE, and SOAK to keep your Air Plant happy!!!
