TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: If President Aquino is combative and confrontational, you can probably blame his Kapampangan roots. His great-grandfather, Servillano Aquino, was a Kapampangan Katipunero who later became a general in Emilio Aguinaldos army. He was the son of Braulio Aquino and Maria Antonina Petrona Aguilar de Hipolito of Angeles town, whose great-grandfather was the towns founder himself, Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda, and whose uncle was town mayor Mariano V. Henson, and whose aunt was Agustina Henson, wife of Pio Rafael Nepomuceno. patriarch of the Nepomuceno clan of Angeles City. When Servillano was nine, Braulio and Petrona Aquino relocated to Concepcion, Tarlac where Braulio became mayor and remarried after Petrona died. His daughter by the second wife was Elena, who later married a Gueco in Magalang. Elena Aquino Gueco had a daughter, Paz Gueco, who married Daniel Romualdez, a congressman from Leyte who later became Speaker of the House. Paz tried to play matchmaker to her nephew Benigno Ninoy Aquino and her husbands pretty first cousin, Imelda Romualdez, who often vacationed in barangay Navaling on the banks of the Parua-Bamban River, where she had picnics with Pazs relatives, including Ninoy Aquino. The romance didnt prosper because Ninoys sisters wanted him to marry Cory Cojuangco instead. Imelda then married Ferdinand Marcos and Ninoy married Cory, both in 1954. Meanwhile, Braulio and Petrona Aquino had a daughter named Brigida (Servillanos sister), who married Andres Ganzon of Angeles. The Ganzons owned a house along Miranda Street in Angeles where Gen. Servillano Aquino would stay in 1899 to watch over his boss, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, who stayed at the Pamintuan mansion just a stones throw away. Servillano Aquino, Noynoys great-grandfather, married Guadalupe Quiambao, daughter of Pablo Quiambao, a fugitive from Macabebe who relocated to Tarlac to become a local Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor, and Lorenza Tanedo, a fiery bolo-wielding Kapampangan woman. Guadalupe was a swordswoman like her mother; she gave up her life to fight in the revolution (she died in battle, holding a bolo with her right hand and a dagger with her left). After Guadalupes death, their three children (all boys, one of whom was Benigno, Sr., Noynoys grandfather) were sent to Angeles to live with their aunt Brigida along Miranda Street. They studied under Maestro Bartolome Tablante who couldnt control the unruly boys, so they were transferred to Bacolor where they were tutored by the super-strict Maestro Modesto Joaquin. Servillano, meanwhile, took a second wife, Guadalupes widowed sister Petronila Estrada (Sen. Eva Estrada Kalaws grandmother). They had a daughter, Fortunata, who served as muse to many Kapampangan poets, eloping with poet laureate and congressman Amado Yuzon, to Shanghai. At 72, Servillano took a third wife, Belen Sanchez, with whom he had a son, Herminio Aquino, who became a congressman, vice governor and Raul Rocos running mate in the 2004 presidential elections). President Noynoys grandfather, Benigno Sr., was President Quezons Secretary of Agriculture who stayed behind during World War II and served as Speaker of the National Assembly. When the country was liberated, he flew to Japan where he was arrested and flown back to Manila to face charges of collaboration. He died while on bail. His widow, Aurora Aquino (actually second wife and third cousin), was left with seven children, one of whom was Benigno Jr., Noynoys father. Benigno Aquino Sr. had a first cousin, Eusebio Aquino, who was a ranking Huk commander (Kumander Bio). Kumander Bios son, Paul, was also a ranking Huk leader, and his daughter, Gloria, became the wife of Luis Tarucs brother and fellow Huk leader Peregrino (father of my friend Greg Taruc). Thus, the Tarucs and the Aquinos are related by marriage. #tropz/research-research//
