TODAY ON DEVELOPING A HEALTHY MIND 2.3 PHOBIA There are people who experience fear in some places or situations (crowd, hospital, airplanes, insects, snakes). In most cases, these fears are mild and not pathological, but other times the dimension reaches the level of phobia, and they prevent the individual from functioning at work, in relationships and family. The most common phobia are agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobia. Agoraphobia: they are afraid of being by themselves in public places where it would be difficult to escape in case of emergency. (Travelling by public transport, living alone) the person starts feeling tension at the fearful situation or even at the thought of it. Social phobia: these people experience an irrational or unfounded fear of social situations such as attending a party, eating in a restaurant or speaking in public. They try by all means to avoid these encounters, often cancelling appointments and excusing themselves from attending events. This affects professional life. Specific phobia: this is a persistent and irrational fear to any object or situation. Phobic objects include/situations include animals (snakes, spiders…), situations (public transport, lift…) HOW TO OVERCOME PHOBIA Phobia and anxiety have many things in common and tend to come from the same origin. • Speak of your problem with someone you trust: Verbalize your fears of situations or objects with someone who knows how to listen to and respect you. This is in itself a great step towards the healing of phobia. • Join a self help group: Seek a psychotherapeutic group where you can find people with the same problem. This will give you the chance to hear from others their practical ideas on how to overcome fears and you could even help others to deal with their own fears. • Practice relaxation: Avoid constant tension and learn how to apply a good relaxation technique, especially before you face a fearful situation. • Seek professional counseling: there are techniques, such as systematic desensitization, with proven and amazingly quick and effective results. However, their application requires the intervention of a professional. • Consult your psychiatrist: Medical/psychiatric treatment oftentimes include the use of tranquilisers and anxiety medication. These can act as supporters of psychotherapeutic methods to soothe the unpleasant symptoms.
