Exam Number: a9232B Salary Minimum: 3862.74 to Salary Maximum: 5346.00 Monthly Position/Program Information: Positions allocable to this class perform a wide variety of paralegal duties under the direction of an attorney. Essential Job Functions: Researches and analyzes law sources and criminal history databases (e.g., statutes, court decisions, criminal pleadings, police reports, legal documents, CLETS, CLEAR, PIMS, and articles) for use in preparing legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, contracts, deeds, opinions, and motions for review, approval, and use by an attorney. Gathers and documents factual information by interviewing witnesses and victims and performing routine legal research in order to assist an attorney in determining appropriate legal action. Drafts a variety of documents, including those related to litigation (e.g., motions, memoranda of points and authorities, interrogatories and answers, complaints and answers) and those not related to litigation (e.g., opinions and ordinances), in accordance with legal requirements, where applicable, and proper English usage for the review, approval, and use by an attorney. Prepares routine reports, forms, and correspondence (e.g., letters, memoranda, and email) by compiling/inputting information in an appropriate format (e.g., text, table, and chart) in order to solicit, convey, or record the information. Maintains a variety of documents, records, forms, and materials (e.g., pleadings, discovery requests and responses, transcripts, court/medical/business/public records, and trial exhibits) by summarizing, organizing, and indexing the information in hardcopy/electronic format in order to ensure its accuracy, relevance, and accessibility. Reviews legal documents and forms for completeness and conformance to specific requirements set forth in applicable legal codes. Assists attorneys in connection with various proceedings (e.g., trials, hearings, and mediations) by preparing, organizing, and indexing trial documents and exhibits in order to facilitate the proceedings as overseen by the attorney. Performs preliminary analyses of legislative bills and researches legislative histories. Summarizes, organizes, and indexes prior opinions, testimony, depositions, and documentary material from interrogatories. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Option 1: Certificate* of completion of a paralegal training program approved by the American Bar Association, OR by the California Department of Education, OR by an equivalent accrediting agency from another state. Option 2: Graduation from an accredited** law school.
