TOI reports that the state Govt wants Bangaloreans to put up roof top solar pv systems to support Bangalores power crisis. In return, for the power exported, they will get Rs. 7.2 per unit for subsidised systems and Rs. 9.6 per unit for unsubsidised systems from BESCOM. They quote a former CERC chairman opposing it saying it wont work if Bangalore doesnt have enough heat! Well, its about about the light and not the heat..in fact solar pv performs better at lower temperatures! But all that apart, I wonder how the grid will be able to support import of small scale power generation at 230 V single phase and 415/440 V 3 phase? Also, what if your neighbour tomorrow decided to add an extra 2 floors to his building shadowing your roof top? And the quality and availability of power on the grid has to be of high standards in order for meaningful export of power to happen. Do we have that at these distribution levels? Lastly, such feed in tariff policies need to be designed with a 15 year life time for consumers to get their returns in the long term. 5 years is insufficient. Such policies cannot be thought of in isolation. In this case, power distribution grid upgradation, building laws and required life time of feed in tariff schemes need to be a pre requisite to make such initiatives successful. Manivannan Sir, can you throw some light on my observations? Awaiting comments from other solar/environment/power enthusiasts/experts as well :-).
