TONITE’S BEST BET: Whose front is it anyway? Рассекреченная история. Тайная дипломатия/Declassified History. “Secret diplomacy” (Documentary. Russia, 2012). --> Here’s a look at the paper trail left by Churchill’s visit to Stalin in August 1942 – the first toe-to-toe go-round between two world class adversaries suddenly forced into alliance, and not particularly happy about it, bub. If anybody was going to respond to Stalin’s insistent calls for a “second front” with the logical if rhetorical inquiry, “Don’t you mean a *third* front? Who carried the ball over 1939-41 – Pushkin?” before moving on to practical business, that person was Winston (“Strangle Bolshevism in its cradle”) Churchill. You won’t hear that pt. articulated in this program (alas), but you will get a lot of the bumpy back-and-forth between the two wary partners: recent declassifications have made it possible, as the Kultura blurb notes, to “describe almost by the minute every one of the five days spent in the USSR by the British Prime Minister.” Other than personal hygiene sequences, everything else offers at least the possibility of turning up some nice historical nuggets. So tune in and see what sluices out as a varied group of historian/archivists (two Russians, a Brit, a German and a Dutchman) offer views on this new cache of materials from the War That Keeps on Giving.
