TOWN OF LEAKESVILLE RESOLUTION CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTION AT THE SOUTH MISSISSIPPI CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE WHEREAS, the South Mississippi Correctional Institute (SMCI) is located just north of the corporate limits of the Town of Leakesville; WHEREAS, a recent community forum was held concerning the working conditions related to low pay, excessive work hours, privatization efforts, as well as extreme understaffing, with said forum covered extensively in the local media; WHEREAS, a recent spate of inmate violence against prison staff has erupted, which has likewise been covered extensively by local and state media outlets; WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville is fully supportive of SMCI and values its employees; WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville is gravely concerned about the understaffing, non-competitive wages, and the “so-called” 480 hour rule, as well as community safety; WHEREAS, The Town of Leakesville intends to make further inquiries and address the above matters with the appropriate officials; WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville intends to present this resolution to the Greene County Board of Supervisors, for their endorsement; and, WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville shall cause to be forwarded a certified copy of this resolution to State Senator Phillip Gandy and State Representative Dennis Debar for action and legislative support; WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville shall cause to be forwarded a certified copy of this resolution to both the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor; WHEREAS, the Town of Leakesville intends to personally present this resolution immediately to the Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner for his consideration and action; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town of Leakesville respectfully requests that the Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, the Mississippi Legislature, Lieutenant Governor, Tate Reeves, and Governor Phil Bryant, take official action to address the above-referenced matters; If you have any comments of this DRAFT, please leave in the comment section.
