TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 1, 2014 Colfax Man Killed in Crash Involving Train Grant Parish – Earlier today, a crash involving a pickup and a train killed a man from Colfax, LA. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:24 p.m., which occurred on Hodnett Road near LA Hwy 8. The crash involved a 2000 Ford pickup, driven by Drewey R. Holsomback (W/M 66 yrs) and a Kansas City Southern train. The Ford was northbound on Hodnett Road when Holsomback failed to yield to the train while crossing a set of tracks. The train collided with the passenger’s side of the Ford which caused it to begin overturning. Holsomback was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” The crash occurred at a crossing with no active warning devices (flashing lights, gates, or bells). However, a railroad crossbuck sign was present at the crossing. Louisiana state law requires motorists to yield the right of way to trains whether active warning devices are present or not. Trains can stop, but they can’t stop quickly. That is why it is so important to look and listen for trains when approaching a railroad crossing and to always yield the right of way to trains. Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 40 fatalities.
