TRY A DIFFERENT ROUTE TO CORFU If you never read about our trip via Thessaloniki last year on Corfu Forum Website: Here it is for those who are thinking of maybe travelling a different way into Corfu. Last year we became adventurous (I mean for goodness sake we are 60 years old and we are going through our third time of being twenty ;D ) We left Gatwick for Thessaloniki, with two large suitcases (sorry cannot manage the old backpack now ::) ) No hotel booked in Thessaloniki, just our easyjet tickets to get there :o Perfect to land there with mainly the Greek People around us, not being pushed by Tourist ::) heaven. We were going to catch the number 78 Bus to Tsmiski Street, but got a little nervous about if would we know where to get off. So we reverted back to acting our ages and caught a Taxi instead ;D We decided after a lot of research of going to Le Palace on Tsmiski Street. We went in and asked if they had a vacant room. Of course said the nice young man. We had a room at the back of the Hotel as Tsmiski is a very busy road and there is no noise at the back of the Hotel. lepalace.gr/en/ What a lovely hotel. The beds are eco mattresses COCO-Mat. I have not had a full nights sleep like this in ages. I slept for eight hours without needing to get up once :-[ Their Breakfast is to die for. My goodness :o I have never seen a Breakfast like it in Greece. Everything was there and the Bread was still warm as I cut a couple of slices. The Chef was there asking if we needed him to cook anything else for us. You have to see it to believe it. We paid €55 for the room and breakfast for two. Thessaloniki is a beautiful City and though we only had one night there, we will definitely be going back for two or three nights next time. When you come out of the Hotel and turn left, walk to the Corner turn left again and 50 metres down the road is the Port. We walked along the Promenade towards the white tower, we stopped and had our first Frappe :-* the waiter came out with two Frappes, a litre bottle of Water and biscuits and cakes. €6 for all that :o it was beautiful :-* again the only tourist around were us two :) That evening we came out of the Hotel turned right and walked along again about 50 or 60 metres and were at Aristotle Street. We first crossed Tsmiski street and went to the top of Aristotle Street and went into the old market, although most of the meat section had closed down, some of the Fruit stalls were still there and we bought a Kilo of Cherries for €2.50 and a Kilo of apricots for €2. Yum yum. We then sat and had a drink and did a little people watching. We then walked down towards the Sea Front still in Aristotle Street. As we walked down on the left hand side, before you came to The Electra Palace Hotel (which is on the right hand side) with the Sea straight ahead we came across what looked like an arcade and we saw the word Ouzerie Aristotelous this is at the end of the passage, it is open till late every day except Sunday, it is a welcoming little bistro-style restaurant which serves excellent meze and kebabs. We had a meal for two with Malamatine Wine, water etc and it came to €35 for the two of us. The next morning after breakfast we reverted back to our twenties, pulling our suitcase across the road to the Bus Stop. We boarded the number 12 Bus and headed for the Bus Station €1.10 each. At the Bus Station we bought our tickets for the Bus and Boat to get to Corfu, for the two of us it came to €92 and that would take us straight to the Ktel bus station in Corfu. Our lovely Bus Driver was a Corfiot Man and he took us under his wing and looked after us telling us where we were etc. Actually we had two Papas sitting opposite us and a lovely Greek Lady behind and they were all so kind to us. The Bus Journey which leaves at 09.30 from Ktel Bus Station got us to the Port at 14.00 hours and we did stop for twenty minutes at a Taverna up in the Mountains. The views were stunning. The mountains with there snow cap tops, took our breath away. We sailed at 14.15 and the Bus came with us. So suitcases were left on the Bus. The journey across on the Boat was fantastic :-* Back on board the Bus we then went to Bus Station and our lovely friendly driver made sure we got on the correct Bus for Messonghi. Would we do it again :o oh yes definitely, roll on next year ;D ;D They may not read post on the Forum, but we would like to thank all our helpful friends for making that Journey so enjoyable. Viv
