TUESDAY, MARCH 04, 2014 HE ALSO TAUGHT ME Good morning my dear friend. Welcome again to Wisdom Speaks Daily Devotional. Today the voice of Wisdom comes to us from the Book of Proverbs chapter 4 verses 3 and 4: When I was my fathers son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he also taught me, and said to me... Get wisdom! Get understanding... [NKJV] As Christian parents we are not just counselled to teach our children the value of wisdom or spiritual understanding, we are actually commanded to do so by God. In our text above, King Solomon makes reference to his dads and moms teaching him to esteem and choose spiritual wealth above physical wealth while living in a royal world. On this same issue of Christian children’s spiritual education Jehovah testified about our faith-father, Abraham: For I know him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him. (Genesis 18:19) Even under the Mosaic Law system, Jewish parents were commanded to teach their children the words and ways of Jehovah God for the peace and prosperity of their posterity: You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 11:19) God had that expectation toward all Jewish parents and He expects no less from us as Christian parents today. For Paul admonished Christian parents, saying: And you, [parents], do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4) Teaching our children the words and ways of our Lord helps to bring them to salvation experience through faith in Christ Jesus early. And salvation experience does not only qualify them for eternal life with God, but also brings the Spirit of God into their hearts to help them know the Lord better. This was evident in the life of young Timothy, Apostle Paul’s protégé. This is what Apostle Paul wrote about this: And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15) And who takes the credit for teaching Timothy the Holy Scriptures from childhood? It was his mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5). But it must be made clear that what you dont have you cannot give. How can you teach your children from the Bible that you yourself dont know? How can you help them to understand it when you yourself dont have the time to study it? In fact, do you really believe in it? Perhaps you are one of those pseudo-Christians (false Christians) who only keep copies of the Holy Bible in their homes and cars for church use only and as family tradition, but never read the Bible? You drive them to church on Sundays but you yourself never go to church. You tell them to pray but they have never seen or heard you pray. You have not personally experienced the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You yourself dont even know what it means to be born-again. How then can you teach your children to be born-again or to be saved through faith? You are not a Christian at all. You are on your way to eternal damnation; but must you take your children along? It’s high time you woke up! And please do not pass the bulk to your childrens school teachers or their Sunday School teachers. Your personal exemplary Christian living is of greater influence on your children than any teachers words of instruction. And for this God will judge you should you fail in this regard. Therefore my dear friend, understand that God expects you to teach your children the words and ways of the Lord as a parent. But you yourself need to know the Lord first in order to teach them. And knowing the Lord is not by theological or clerical education but it begins with an experience, a definite instant salvation experience. Without this initial personal experience you will find it impossible to truly understand the words and ways of the Lord or follow them yourself. So get it right first, and then you would be able to give it right to your children. Why not get it right now? Why not give your heart to Jesus Christ now? Why not begin to read the Bible yourself from today? PRAYER: Lord, I give You my heart now; be my personal Lord and Saviour. Teach me Your words and Your ways from the Holy Scripture as I devote myself to its reading daily beginning from today. I want to help my children find divine wisdom which would make them truly successful, fulfilled and happy in life. I receive Your grace to do this by my exemplary Christian lifestyle from this day—in Jesus name. Amen. Bye for now. See you again tomorrow.
