TWC NEWS: LOCKPORT, N.Y. -- Residents of a recently condemned apartment building on Robinson Road in the town of Lockport still have many answers as to when theyll be able to return. They say two weeks, now theyre saying two months, said Taniel Staten. Staten has lived in the building, which was condemned for health and safety code violations, for the past three years. Hes now staying with his mother after his home was boarded up more than one week ago. The rest of my friends are sleeping in their cars. A couple of people are sleeping next door on the floor at a friends house, Staten said. Like some other tenants, Sheila Hutchinson said she doesnt have family in the area to stay with, but despite her hardship this past week, she considers herself lucky. Hutchinson has since moved into a new apartment. She came back to her old apartment Thursday to try to get some of her belongings. Fifteen minutes was what we had to get everything we wanted out of there, and there was no telling when we were going to be able to get back in again, Hutchinson said. Both Hutchinson and Staten said the violations at the 24-unit building were exaggerated and the repairs that need to be made are minor. They said the issue lies with the building inspector and the owner. I think the building inspector has a grudge against this building and the people that own it, and I think he needs to get over it, Hutchinson said. According Staten, it was same story last summer. This is the third year in a row hes condemned it, Staten said. Last year, August 1, he condemned it. He condemned it for just stairs and something else, and the stairs were fixed in about an hour. The owner of the apartments, Jia Lin Rong, did not want to speak on camera, but showed us a receipt of the repaired fire alarm system. The building inspector, Brian Belson, dodged our camera as he was leaving the building Thursday. Weve also reached out to the towns deputy supervisor, but so far have not heard back.
