TWUC Chair Dorris Heffron responds to Russell Smiths Globe and Mail article In the age of DIY publishing, why have a Writers Union? (ow.ly/uL4zZ): In his Globe and Mail culture column last Friday, Russell Smith tells of enjoying annual payments for the use of his books in libraries through Public Lending Right and payments for copying of his work through Access Copyright. He acknowledges that these payments to writers are the result of years of collective lobbying by The Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC) but he will not support or give back by joining TWUC. Talk about ‘biting the hand that feeds you’! In fact, the Writers’ Union is needed all the more in this age of great publishing changes, to maintain the programs we have and create appropriate new ones. Our over 2,000 members attest to that.
