Table Talk By: Mike S. Apostol MNLF Habier Malik an ex-Marine soldier? Neighborhood beer joint, all around the city outside of the conflict area, is buzzing with loose talks that the MNLF sub-commander Malik who led the still on-going siege of Zamboanga City is an ex-marine soldier. Although when and where he was assigned when he was active as a marine soldier is not mentioned by many beer drinking enthusiast, who now converge in neighborhood sari-sari stores, and downed couples of beer and stop before the 8 PM curfew starts. Many information can be taken from this group of professionals, ordinary employees from the government and private institutions, construction laborers, gamblers, senior citizen retirees and many other beer drinkers, who all converged in a favorite neighborhood corner store after 5 PM after two weeks of being idle. Besides, hotel bars and many restaurants are also close for business so a neighborhood store is the best alternative the beer is cold and cheap and the finger foods (pulutan) are home-made aside from the fact that your residence is just a walking distance and far from being caught on the city wide curfew. *** One interesting topic that caught Table Talk’s attention is MNLF Commander Malik has been a government soldier as a marine before he became a rebel, if this is true then we are not surprise why he is so elusive to be caught by the combine forces of government that is pursuing him even today. Maybe before he became a rebel, he was also a battle scarred marine that knew the terrain and uses the same fighting tactics of the soldiers pursuing him. A soldier from any component for that matter is trained to kill, survived and hide this maybe, perhaps, the reason why up to this writing MNLF Malik is not caught and arrested from the atrocities he has done to Zamboanga City. However, with all the government forces looking for him, Malik’s Marine soldier instincts might catch up with him because there are better and braver soldiers than him, from those pursuing government forces. MNLF Malik definitely is not “Rambo” or “The Avengers” in movies but if the government will not catch MNLF Malik sooner, he will be a hero and idol to most the MNLF sympathizers. *** Another bizarre loose and raw information gleaned from those corner store beer joint is allegedly, some MNLF fighters raped some dead corpse of hostages and had them videoed in their cell phones and snipped “shabu” to keep them alert at all times. Basing on those allegations, there is a possibility because a “drug crazed” fighter knows no boundary. Perhaps to know the veracity of this allegation, all cell phones owned by the captured or dead MNLF fighters should be viewed and reviewed. *** Unbelievable information also gathered but worth investigating by the Crisis Committee and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is that allegedly some opportunist evacuees are secretly selling their ration of “pack lunch” from 10 to 15 pesos per pack to laborers, jeep terminals and even in some nearby barangay neighborhood. This anomaly is serious if true and alleged culprits must be arrested and apprehended. They are not only cheating the government but readily putting the blame to many government agencies for inadequate supply of food which some evacuees are complaining every day. This has got to be check and stopped before those opportunist will enrich themselves at the expense of government and charitable institution. This is “black marketing” at the highest degree. All the authorities has to do to stop this wayward evacuees is field some of their people in jeep terminals and parking places and where there are laborers. The government should not be outwitted by wily people who come to her for rescue and support. *** Scoop: In every crisis where there is risk there is big money, a food for thought for victims and evacuees, government agencies handling the crisis and all those concern in the crisis. Nothing to lose but all to gain if we investigate and check. This are all raw information but it’s better to check the veracity of this allegations. Agree or disagree. ***
