Tafsir Surah Al-Maun This Surah is a very strong warning for those who are stingy, greedy and who do not even share the smallest of things. It begins with a question addressed to the Prophet (P) and also to every Muslim after him. The Surah states: Are you familiar with the one who denies the Hereafter and the Reckoning that will occur in the Hereafter? Inform me about this denier. I shall list to you some of his characteristic so that you may recognize this denier. 1. He is the one who typically drives away orphan. 2. He does not show him kindness, and prevents him harshly from his right and his wealth. 3. He does not feel any compassion or mercy in his heart for this weak orphan. [This hardness of heart is a sign of disbelief in the Hereafter.] 4. He does not encourage himself nor his family or anyone else to feed the poor because of extreme stinginess and greed. All of this because of the hardness of his heart. He repulses the orphan; he does not show compassion to the poor. And this hardness of heart is results from his denial of the Recompense. Then, the Surah goes on to threaten these deniers of the recompense and warn them of punishment and destruction. It also completes the discussion of their characteristics; they are heedless of their prayer and unconcerned with it. This could be in the form of abandoning it outright, delaying it from its time, not performing its pillars, or not praying with sincerity. They will do good so that people will see them, but when they are far away from people, they do not do any good. Furthermore, they are stingy so they refuse people simple needs even when they are able to provide them. This is even though people inevitable need one another’s help for such things, like dishes or simple tools to perform some task. Whoever refuses to share his good with people, then it is appropriate that good be refused to him on Yawm Al-Qiyamah. Lessons and Reflections 1. People are in need of one another. 2. One of the signs of those who deny the Recompense is that they are hard of heart with the weak and needy. 3. Islam places great emphasis on aiding the weak members of society such as the orphans and the needy. 4. Great focus must be paid to Salah, and it must be performed with sincerity and on time. We know that the Munifiqoon (hypocrites) are people who delay their Salah make habitual excuses to neglect the worship of Allah. 5. If the hypocrites prays, he does not hope for a reward and if he does no pray, he fears no punishment. He is bound to be cast in the lowest depths of the Hell fire. How grave then will the punishment be for those who do not pray at all? 6. We should learn the characteristics of those whom Allah warns us about and avoid possessing them at all costs.
