Tagged by Katherine Dubke. :) Ten Books (or book series) That Have Stuck With Me Through The Years (in no particular order of significance): 1). Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis: I read this quite a while back now, but it has stayed with me all these years as one of my favorite books of all time. Lewis is a brilliant writer, and he makes Christianity so clear, simple, and real. 2). Redeeming Love - Francine Rivers: I havent met a person whos read this book and hasnt liked it. lol That being said, its just such a beautiful story of absolute true love (and definitely not isolated to only romantic love). 3). The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien: I cant count how many times Ive read this book. I cherish my copy like its a dear friend. :) Its a book I grew up reading and reading again, and I feel that I will forever pick it up to study its pages. Theres nothing about it I dont like. It has characters with real emotions (sometimes brave, sometimes scared, doing the noble thing, and sometimes not). Its the epitome of action and adventure mixed with beautiful poems and vivid imagery of a world you will ache to revisit by the end. Oh...and Tolkien is hilarious...which is just the icing on the cake. :) 4). The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance) - Christopher Paolini: Dragons and magic and elves, oh my! haha No, but really...this series is so dear to my heart. Its hard to explain just exactly what makes me love them. I am a sucker for fantasy, so just the adventure/fantasy aspect of these books alone is enough to get me hooked. But Ive been reading (and rereading) these for years and have grown so attached to the characters. Its another great story of good vs. evil mixed with relationships between friends, lovers, brothers, etc. that grow and are tested throughout the series. 5). The Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis: Anyone who has read these books (or even seen the movies) knows that they are so much more than childrens stories. Lewis again finds a way to let the message of Christs love shine through a story in the most subtle yet captivating way. These stories are so well known, that theres not much more I need to say...except, read them if you havent yet. :) 6). The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark - William Shakespeare: To be, or not to be: that is the question. Ive read quite a few Shakespeare plays, but Hamlet is my favorite. Who doesnt love a good tragedy? ;) 7). The Mark of the Lion series (A Voice in the Wind, An Echo in the Darkness, and As Sure As the Dawn) - Francine Rivers: These books have it all: romance, history, moral lessons, strong characters. These books truly changed me as a person.Theyre wonderful. 8). Song of Abraham - Ellen Gunderson Traylor: This is the traditional Bible story of Abraham written with characters feelings and emotion, vivid details, and even romance. I remember thinking I would be bored with this book, since it was a mandatory read for my literature class in high school. But, that definitely wasnt the case! Im not 100% sure of the historical accuracy of this book as it relates to Abraham in the Bible (there will always be details in fictional books based on truth that are a bit made up), but as a whole, I believe its quite accurate, and is definitely worth reading. 9). The Sultans Dilemma - Tawfiq al-Hakim: This has to be my most unique choice thus far. haha This play is about a Mamluk slave-soldier who ascends to the rank of Sultan without having been formally manumitted. The Chief Justice argues that he cannot serve as Sultan while still a slave, and must be sold to settle the previous Sultans estate. As you can imagine, arguments ensue. lol It is a story about choosing right from wrong, despite social status or those who feel they can live above the law or have the right to live above doing what is right and good. It is also a comedy, and quite hilarious. lol I dont exactly know where a copy could be picked up to read; its not the readily available. I read it in an anthology a few years back for my Ancient Literature class. However, if you ever come across it, its worth the read. 10). The Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) - J.R.R. Tolkien: These books changed my life. Im well aware at how strange that sounds...but nevertheless, its true. Theres not a lot more I can say about them without writing just way too much. So, Ill leave it at that.
