Take a minute to geek-out with me. Nielsen wrote his fifth - TopicsExpress

Take a minute to geek-out with me. Nielsen wrote his fifth symphony in only two movements (the only symphony he wrote with this structure). At one point he jokingly said that most composers run out of ideas by the end of the third movement anyway. Aside from the unusual structure, the first movement starts out slow and hauntingly beautiful, then it quickly becomes darker and heavier and sounds as if the orchestra is battling a lone renegade snare drummer in David and Goliath, light versus dark sort of way. When I listen to it, it makes me feel as though Im watching an old epic film from Hollywoods golden age, something like Cleopatra or The Ten Commandments, and I cant help but sit in anxious anticipation of the outcome. I’m so excited to see this piece live this weekend. How does it make you feel when you listen to it? Listen here bit.ly/Q75k3C bit.ly/1oNDhWH
