Taking notes in class is a good way to study when you get home, - TopicsExpress

Taking notes in class is a good way to study when you get home, but this is actually counter intuitive for some of you. If you made straight As and never took notes, read this. What this does is cause your brain to use the pencil as a sort of mental crutch.. When you hear something (or read something, for some learning types) it forces your brain to take in the information, decode/process its meaning to gain understanding, and store it in your memory. Some people are better at this than others, but keeping a curious mind will help. When you write something down, it takes a lot of brain power. Try having a conversation while typing an essay for class.. Its hard isnt it? When you have to copy notes from verbal or written information, its now using even more of your brain, to form the mental pipeline from your ears to your hand. That means the hearing and motor functions, are more vital to your brain, to retain the knowledge; so why store the memory?.. Well the answer is simple, it doesnt get stored in your head, it gets stored on the paper. So the question now becomes, how do you learn best? Are you visual kinnestetic, or verbal? Most of the people from my generation (Generation X,) seem to benefit more from listening, than writing down notes. But we are all a little different. Research the different learning styles, and find out what you are. Having this piece of knowledge will help you learn and adapt to new things, and the dreaded mid term / final wont be so scary.
