Talking with a cousin about financial situations in the selling of my Grandpas house. She wants to buy the house to try to keep it in the family but who knows what the end result will be. I truly hope she gets it but in the end its just a house. Its funny how other family members put their family politics and business in the middle of my Grandpa wanting to sell his house. My grandparents followed David Rameys Total Money Makeover (yeah just learned that this weekend) and were completely set as far as their retirement plans go. My Grandpa never expected to out live my Grandma. He built the home bit by bit with the help of family members and friends while they lived in a small traveling trailer they bought once all the kids moved out of their house. I remember roller skating on the foundation when I was little. I remember that foundation transforming into the house it is now from the walls being laid out brick by brick to the shingles that my Grandpa put in himself to the decor and landscaping my Grandma picked out and installed herself. I remember Grandpa swearing when he put in the downstairs door to the restroom and it not stay closed and all the meals my Grandma cooked in her new electric stove. I have a lot of memories in that house but it was my Grandparents home. Id hate to see it go but my Grandpa is alone in the big old house now. All he wants is to travel and see family he hasnt seen in years and then settle in a small apartment in the city where he doesnt have to fix the plumbing or cut the grass. A place were he can sit in his balcony and watch the traffic go by and maybe make a few grumpy old man neighbor friends. Hes not looking to make money off the house, he just wants to live the rest of his life. I love my Grandpa and I want him to be happy. I listened to my mom complain about how she was the last to know and she believes it should stay in the family and blah blah blah... She has a good argument but its still just a house. If she wants it so bad she should buy it. Thats crazy I still have a mortgage on my house! Then who do you suppose Grandpa should give the house to in order to save it from another family? No matter how my Grandpa tried nobody was happy. If he gave it to a cousin (grandchild) which one should he pick? Theres only thirteen of us and most of us have a home already. What have I ever done above my cousin to be given such a lovely home? And what happens when I decided to move out of the country side to follow the demands of a job I love or what if I got married and my husbands job demands that we move? Would I be obligated to live in the house and never sell it? Am I to pass it on to another family member who may not care as much about the house as I do? Sometimes we put way too much value in things we are too afraid to lose. Im perfectly happy in my mobile home. I have goals in for my family that doesnt include remodeling a home that was built for my grandparents who didnt have small children in mind when they built it. Yes, it will be sad to see it go to another family because some of my aunts and uncles refuse to lose out on the only inheritance my grandparents promised them. However, its not their choice. My Grandpa didnt just decide to sell the house. He thought about it for years. He had trouble deciding what to do. He said he was going to sell it years ago and nobody took him up on his offer. He realtor watch him like a hawk hoping to be there at the time time to take claim as the seller of the house but he wanted to make sure he got the best possible offer for the house. So, why all the drama? The only way to make this far is to sell the house and divide the profit of the house between all seven of his children. If they didnt like it, the house is for sell. They could consider their share of the sell their discount and leave my Grandpa be. -Glory-
